Setup Orbi Router as Access Point

If you already have a functional router provided by your ISP and you just want the benefits of the Orbi device for its better coverage capabilities without having to change the existing router you have at home, you can do this by setting up the Orbi device as an access point. This setup is called the AP Mode.

How to Set Up Orbi Router as Access Point

  • Connect the Orbi router to the existing router using an Ethernet cable (LAN-LAN).
  • Access the login page using orbilogin.com and enter the admin login credentials.
  • Navigate to: Advanced > Advanced Setup > Router/AP Mode.
  • Select “AP Mode” and click “Apply”.
  • The Orbi router will reboot and function as an access point.

Setting up the Orbi router as an access point is beneficial for homes that have existing routers provided by the ISPs or fiber routers such as the Verizon Fios routers that you want to utilize for its capabilities and functionality while taking advantage of the benefits provided by the Orbi device for its better coverage capabilities.

Orbi as Access Point

Netgear Orbi Setup with Existing Router

The question that is usually asked is: Can I connect my Orbi to my existing router? The answer is yes, in two ways:

Option A – Orbi in Router Mode (Default)

In this setup, your modem is connected to the Orbi router. All the tasks of a router are performed by Orbi, and your previous router is bypassed or not used. This is the default setup of Netgear Orbi.

Option B – Orbi in Access Point Mode

As explained in the description above, the Orbi device connects via Ethernet cable to the user’s existing router and essentially acts as an access point for the user’s wireless network. Both options are fully supported. If you’re setting up the Orbi system with your existing router and you’re unsure of the configuration to go with, we can discuss the decision process with you in just a few minutes.

Netgear Orbi Satellite Setup Guide

The Orbi satellites are also known as nodes. It is the Orbi satellites that actually make the system a mesh network. Each Orbi satellite is able to communicate with the main Orbi router using a special wireless backhaul connection to ensure that your devices are always able to connect to the strongest signal without interruption. Below are some steps on how to setup Orbi satellite:

  • After your Orbi router setup is complete, position your satellite(s) 2-3 rooms away from the main router.
  • Plug the satellite into a wall outlet. Press the Power button.
  • Wait 2-3 minutes. The satellite will automatically attempt to sync with the main Orbi router.
  • Check the satellite LED:
  • Pulsing White = Syncing in progress
  • Solid Blue = Connected- excellent signal
  • Amber = Connected- fair signal (consider moving closer to router)
  • Magenta = Failed to sync (move satellite closer to router and retry)
  • Press the “Sync” button located at the back of the main Orbi router.
  • Within 2 minutes, press the “Sync” button located at the back of the satellite device.
  • The LED light will pulsate and then turn blue once the process has been completed.
  • If the process fails, the device should be reset and the process repeated.

Orbi WiFi Router Setup Using WPS

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) is a feature that enables you to quickly connect compatible devices to your Orbi network without having to enter the Wi-Fi password.

Common Orbi Setup Problems & How to Fix Them

Even the best routers can run into occasional setup issues. Here are the most common Orbi setup problems and their solutions:

Orbilogin.com not loading

If the page is not loading on Orbilogin.com, the most probable reason is that your device is not connected to the Orbi network. Ensure your phone, laptop, or PC is connected to the Orbi router’s network before accessing the page. You may also use the IP address 192.168.1.1 to access the router’s page. If the problem persists, you may try clearing the browser’s cache, disabling the VPN if it is active, and then rebooting the router.

Not connecting to the internet with Orbi

If you find that your Orbi router is unable to connect to the internet, the first step to troubleshoot the issue is to check the connections. First, you need to make sure the cable connected to the modem is properly connected to the Orbi router’s yellow-colored WAN port. Once you have done this, you need to restart the modem as well as the Orbi router to refresh the internet connection. In addition to the above, you need to make sure the correct ISP connection type is selected on the router settings on the orbilogin.com website.

Not syncing Satellite device

If the Orbi satellite device is unable to sync with the main router, the first thing to do is to check the distance between the two devices, as it could be the main culprit. Try moving the device closer to the main router so that the signal strength improves. After that, the Sync button should be pressed first on the router, followed by the Sync button being pressed on the satellite device within two minutes. If the syncing does not work, a factory reset of the satellite device can solve the problem.

Forgot admin password

If you have forgotten the password to access the admin interface of the Orbi router, you can reset it easily. To reset it, you need to locate a small button at the back of the device. This is called the reset button. To reset it, you need to press it using a paper clip. Hold it down for 10 to 15 seconds until it reboots. Then, you will have to reconfigure it.

Slow Wi-Fi speeds

If you are experiencing slow speeds on your Wi-Fi network using the Orbi system, you might consider the placement of the satellite devices. You might consider repositioning the satellite devices to be placed halfway between the router and the area where you are experiencing slow signals. You might also consider keeping them away from thick walls and other metallic objects that might interfere with the signals. You might also consider going to orbilogin.com and turning on the QoS settings or using the 5 GHz band for faster speeds.

Orbi app not able to detect router device

If the Orbi mobile app is unable to find your router, the first thing to do is to check the Wi-Fi connection. The phone needs to be connected to the Orbi Wi-Fi to find the router. However, if the router is not found, another thing to do is to reinstall the Orbi app or restart the phone and router. The setup process can also be achieved through the web interface by visiting orbilogin.com.

LED is blinking Amber/Magenta

A blinking amber LED light on an Orbi satellite usually implies that the satellite’s connection with the main router is weak. This implies that the satellite is too far from the main router and should be brought closer. A magenta LED usually implies that the satellite is not syncing with the router at all. In this case, the sync button should be pressed on both the router and the satellite, with the satellite brought closer to the main router.
